Google Chrome OS vs Microsoft Windows

The latest news on the software front is that Google, the 800 pound gorilla in the search engine industry has decided to create an operating system. Some of you are saying ‘So what?’ While others are asking “What does that even mean? and Why do I care?”
Here’s why Google creating an operating sytem is a big deal.
Google is creating an operating system that will compete directly with Microsoft Windows. Should the operating system prove reliable the competition from Google will likely force Microsoft to reduce prices on their operating system to stay competitive.
The current rumors say the Google operating system will be based on Linux, an open source platform. An open source system allows user input into the design (assuming you have the requisite programming skills) thus giving Google a large pool of talent to choose from. Also by not creating a proprietary system like Microsoft Windows, Google will spend less money on maintaining their system thus making it less expensive to create and maintain.
Unlike a proprietary operating system that requires a formal procedure for users to suggest design changes, with an open source systems, users are encouraged to make modifications and then let interested parties know about the modifications. In this case, Google would be alerted to changes that programmers have created and would then have an option of including those modifications in a later release or suggesting further enhancements.
All in all I see Google’s new operating system as a welcome announcement and hope that it leads to Microsoft actually testing new releases of their software before sending it to unsuspecting public.
